During my year at Samsung research Institute Bangalore, I was part of the team designing Carmode for Galaxy, a Samsung mobile mode which enables a safer driving experience. It provides a simplified interface of the mobile phone on the car dash board. The mode presents access to only the functions you might need in a car, like navigation and music playback, and gives them large, bright buttons easy to see without having to turn attention away from the road. What’s seen on the smartphone screen is beamed to the car using MirrorLink, so the app can be interacted with through dashboard or steering wheel controls and Samsung’s S-Voice personal assistant.

All scenarios and nuances of the driving experience where taken into account while designing the app. The visual design of the project included creating screens consistent with the samsung design language and designing to the Car connectivity Consortium guidelines which posed many challenges given the strict rules in the guidelines which made it hard to create aesthetically pleasing design. It was a commercialisation project and not a research-oriented one. Resolutions were required in a fast-paced manner. We created pixel-perfect guidelines and assets for the development team, and reviewed the app on different Samsung Galaxy devices and car dash boards.
